“Halloween Candy Buy Back”

(Honolulu, HI) This Halloween, trick-or-treaters can bring their excess candy to Dr. Wilfred Miyasaki’s dental office in Downtown Honolulu.  Children and even adults, will receive $1.00 per pound of candy they bring in.  All candy collected will then be sent to U.S. troops overseas.  Don’t worry, a lot of tooth brushes will be sent to the troops too.

Dr. Miyasaki is leading this decay-fighting movement by giving away dollars in exchange for candy, and the children get a toothbrush and toothpaste also.  Miyasaki said, “Halloween should be about having fun, and we want kids to enjoy themselves.  But realistically, most kids collect way more candy than they can or should even think about eating.

“With a Halloween Candy Buy-Back event, kids can have the fun of trick-or-treating, enjoy some candy, and still provide a much-appreciated treat for our troops,” says Miyasaki.  “We’ve heard from returning troops that candy from home is considered a very special treat.”

The candy buy-back will occur at Dr. Miyasaki’s office at 1139 Bethel St., across from Hawaii Theater Concert Hall, on the Saturday after Halloween, November 3rd, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

“Visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing twice a day are great preventive measures, but doing away with pounds of excess sugar would really make a difference too,” says Dr. Miyasaki.  “Most kids will eat their favorite candy right away, so why keep all that extra candy around.”

Global sugar consumption for kids increases by about 2% annually, and currently sits at 50 million tons per year, which means parents need to be sure their kids’ teeth are being cared for more than ever.

Candy not only causes cavities, but can lead to hyperactivity and weight gain as well.  In some cases, biting on the hard candy can lead to broken teeth and damaged braces.  For more information, call 533-0000.
